Story of the Guqin · 18-Month Craftsmanship

Sundayou old Chinese fir wood

Origin — The wood for this batch comes from 400+ year old Chinese fir trees. Each piece was personally selected by our master luthier, tapping to listen for the right tone, choosing boards with straight grain and uniform density.

Craftsmanship Journey — From rough planing of the top, hollowing the sound chamber, joining the bottom, to applying the lacquer base, installing hui markers, and setting up the strings — every step follows ancient methods while incorporating modern acoustic refinements. The entire process spans 18 months, with the lacquer base alone taking 6 months, each layer requiring 10+ days of drying and repeated polishing.

Month 1Wood Selection · Rough planing of fir top, determining body contours (removing sapwood, preserving the most uniform heartwood)
Month 2Top Arching · Hand-planing the蕉叶 (banana leaf) arch, initial tone testing (tapping to assess resonance)
Month 3Sound Chamber · Hand-carving the interior, repeated refinement to ideal thickness (critical acoustic stage determining resonance)
Month 4Nayin & Sound Pool · Fine-tuning internal structure for open and stopped tones (testing nayin protrusion and sound pool depth)
Month 5Bottom Assembly · Gluing catalpa bottom to top using traditional fish glue (two weeks of setting for stable adhesion)
Month 6Initial Tuning · Temporary strings installed, testing overall tone, adjusting sound chamber (further refinement based on results)
Month 7First Lacquer Base · Coarse deer horn powder, covering the body, drying (fills wood grain for subsequent layers)
Month 8Layers 2-3 · Medium and fine base layers, each dried 10 days, repeated polishing (gradually smoothing the surface)
Month 9Layers 4-5 · Finer deer horn powder, starting to show warm luster (different grit abrasives for each polish)
Month 10Layer 6 · Fine base, surface nearly smooth, beginning urushi undercoat (urushi mixed with fine powder)
Month 11Urushi Finish · First polishing coat, curing in humidity-controlled room (temperature and humidity carefully regulated)
Month 12Coats 2-3 · Repeated urushi application and polishing, luster emerges (fine ash polishing after each coat)
Month 13Hui Markers · Pure gold powder mixed with urushi, positioning 13 hui (harmonic testing ensures precision)
Month 14Bridge & Saddle · Old rosewood, installing and adjusting string action (bridge height determines playing feel)
Month 15Tuning Pegs · Old rosewood handcrafted, assembling and adjusting tension (smooth rotation, stable pegs)
Month 16String Setup · Stringing and testing, fine-tuning bridge and saddle (balanced open, stopped, harmonic tones, no buzzing)
Month 17Opening Sound · Daily playing to activate the instrument (new guqin needs to open, releasing wood stress)
Month 18Final Inspection · Tuning and inscribing the guqin inscription (unique serial number, recording wood source and date)
